BOTB Experience

Ramsey BOTB Voting Experience

Overview

I decided to take the product designer skills challenge that Ramsey Solutions uses to qualify the product designers they hire. I was making the title change from graphic designer to product designer, and wanted to see where I landed among the peers I was working with on a daily basis. I worked with our company recruiter to go through the formal process, while I waited for an opportunity to open up as our company grew.

For the challenge, I was equipped with a creative brief, with what they were looking for, along with design assets to use.

Problem Statement

The current BOTB paper voting experience is not ideal for audience members, participants and volunteers, as well as not being scalable as the audience size increases every year.

Goals/Deliverables

  1. A slide deck outlining my process and solution to the problem and how I got there.

  2. A high fidelity visual design solution as a prototype.

Research

Interviews had already been conducted and are established as a “representative sample of the feedback from event attendees and participants”, so I assumed that the interviews can be used to create personas to give users a face and establish user pain points. Along with that, the “business” or event coordinators had already decided that they wanted a digital solution to be created.

User Personas

User Pain Points

  1. Unfair Judging

Bands feel like they aren’t being judged fairly.

  2. Stressed Volunteers

Tending to the ballots is way too stressful.

  3. Clunky Voting

Voting is too labor intensive for audience members.

  4. Nonscalable Voting

Paper voting isn’t scalable as crowd size grows.

  5. Locked Voting

Audience cannot change vote on the fly.

Desired Outcome

Our Ramsey BOTB app will let users easily vote and see the real time results of the audience member votes. Bands will be judged and voted for based on a standard set of performance categories. This will ease the pain points of the audience members, participants, and volunteers with a seamless digital experience that in return keeps them engaged with live BOTB experience.

Conclusion

In conclusion I designed a simple app that speaks to the core problem of difficulty voting and staying engaged in the BOTB experience.

Moving forward there would need to be user testing and iteration so that we could optimize the experience and potentially add new features and find ways to surprise and delight the users.

I ended up with about 12 hours total over the course of a week in the project, as I was trying to work quickly and prove out what I could do in a short amount of time.
